Buy your seed
potatoes early whilst there is a good selection, the popular
varieties are usually sold out before the end of February,
Don't forget to buy your fertiliser at the same time.
Spray dormant fruit trees with
Winter Tree Wash to kill green fly, black fly and scale insect eggs.
Check tree ties for security
and chafing. |

Sow summer
bedding seeds in the greenhouse or propogator.
Sow hardy annuals outside under
glass to provide early summer flowers and blooms for
cutting. |
| March |
Feed daffodils
and pick off any dead heads.
Prune roses when weather
improves, cutting stems down to just above a developing bud.
Remove any dead, weak or badly place branches.
Plant early seed potatoes
late in the month.
Start spraying fruit trees
against mildew, apple scab and codling moth at bud burst and
continue through to fruitlet stage.
Sow new lawns if conditions
are suitable and treat established lawns with sulphate of
iron if moss is present.
Start to sow some early veg
and flower seeds direct into the garden. |

Apply feed, feed
and weed, weed and mosskiller to lawns.
Put supports in ready for
growing perennials, like delphiniums and lupins.
Start to guard against slugs
by applying slug pellets around plants, |
| May |
Spray weeds
whilst they are actively growing.
Hanging baskets and tubs can be
planted up with bedding plants; watch out for late frosts
though!
Spring flowering bulbs will
benefit from s feed this time of year.
Install a water butt ready
for the sweltering June weather!
The flea season will be upon
us, so check your pets for unwanted visitors!
Don't forget that you should
also worm cats and dogs every six months. |

Watch out for
lawn weeds and treat as soon as possible.
Spray plants regularly to
protect against pets.
Net soft fruit crops to
protect from birds.
Dead head border plants to
encourage a second flush of flowers later in the year. |

To prolong
flowering, feed summer bedding plants every week and pick
off dead flowers regularly, so that they don't sow seed.
Don't let weeds seed; spray when
young. Remember one year's seeds - seven years weeds! And
it's true!

| August |
Spray roses
regularly against pests, mildew, blackspot and rust. Dead
head flowers as soon as they are past their best.
If the weather is hot and dry
(!) Don't cut lawns too short.
Everlasting flowers can be
cut and hung upside down to dry.
If you're going away on
holiday you can place house plants on some capillary matting
in a tray and then place the end of the matting in a bath
full of water; you shouldn't then come home to dead house
plants! |
| September |
This is the best
month to sow a new lawn, when there is less competition from
weeds. Save on winter
heating bills by insulating greenhouses with bubble
polythene.
Lift tender bulbs and tubers,
dust Dahlias etc with yellow Sulphur before storing. |
| October |
Put grease bands
around trees. Feed
lawns with Autumn lawn food if you haven't already done so;
as well as ensuring a healthy lawn next year it will also
help to control moss.
Collect fallen leaves and
compost them.
Mulch tender plants and
Fuschias.
Prepare your dog for walking
on dark nights with a reflective coat. |
| November |
This is a good
month to plant trees and shrubs as there is still enough
warmth in the soil to encourage root growth.
Prune standard Roses.
Do any Winter digging,
working in plenty of organic matter. |
| December |
Mulch shrubs,
Roses, hedges and tender perennials.
Slowly bring bowls of bulbs out
of cool, dark conditions into warmer, lighter surroundings.
